About
The Monument is a historic pub located at the crossroads of St Dunstans Street, London Road, and Whitstable Road in Canterbury. Established in 1803, the building has a rich history, having stood for over 400 years. It is situated opposite St Dunstans church, along the main route into Canterbury from London, a path that has been traveled for over a millennium.
The pub's name is derived from a large wooden crucifix that once marked the junction, welcoming pilgrims to the city. Although the original cross was removed before photography was invented, an artist's impression of it can be seen near the main bar. The Monument also boasts one of the largest beer gardens in Canterbury, filled with colorful plants and ample seating, making it a pleasant spot for enjoying drinks outdoors.
As an independent freehouse, The Monument offers a curated selection of high-quality drinks at reasonable prices. The pub serves food daily, including bar snacks, seasonal specials, and traditional Sunday roasts, catering to both locals and visitors alike.
